“A World Without Limitations on Nuclear Weapons? – Addressing the demise of Nuclear Weapon Treaties

On 5 February 2026 the last one of the bilateral US-Russian nuclear arms limitation treaties, New START, will expire. If there is no agreement reached at the last moment to stick to the limits contained in this treaty, the world could usher into an unbriddled nuclear arms race, For the first time in decades it would be up to the individual nuclear armed states with the highest numbers of nuclear weapons to produce as many nuclear arms as they like. Such a new nuclear arms race would further destabilize international security and especially on our continent Europe. Over the last months the stationing of nuclear arms and their sharing has increased in European states. Furthermore, additional billions of dollars would get syphoned away from much needed causes like health care, education, social policies and development.

Against this threatening background 22 January 2026 will mark the 5th anniversary of the entry into force of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). About 100 states have joined the TPNW already. Thus the majority of the international community has bound itself also legally to pursuing security through a nuclear weapon free world. At a time when nuclear salience has increased in Europe, it is important to look into the huge potential and the success of the TPNW.

Speakers:

  • Olga Karatch from Our House / “Stop BY Nukes” (Belarus) who will address the stationing of Russian nuclear weapons in Belarus and their negative impact on human rights,

  • Prof. Tonci Tadic, Head of fusion research (IFMIF-DONES), Ruder Boskovic Institute Zagreb.

  • Jana Baldus (Peace Research Institute Frankfurt / European Leadership Network) who will address the increased risk in a world without limits on nuclear weapons and the success of the TPNW.

  • Sophie Bolt, General Secretary of the UK Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament: to address the renewed stationing of US nuclear weapons in the UK, the British nuclear up-build and the dangers of stationing and nuclear sharing for our security.
