A member of the Mayors for Peace European Chapter and leading city for our Croatian National Chapter, Biograd na Moru, took part in the 2022 Review Conference of the Non Proliferation Treaty.

Led by the Mayors for Peace Vice-President and Mayor of Nagasaki, Tomihisa Taue, our delegation highlighted local governments role in promoting international cooperation to achieve the ultimate goal of the NPT and the #NuclearBan agenda.

You can read the comment by the MfP President in response to the outcome of the 10th NPT Review Conference here.

According to Jasminka Bajlo, Directress of Biograd na Moru’s International Relations Division participating to Conference, the event highlighted the momentum of the #NuclearBan agenda spearheaded by the adoption of the TPNW Treaty and its First Meeting of States Parties (held in 2022 – know more about our participation here).

The TPNW was highly praised by many ambassadors and the president of the 2022 1MSP Meeting, Ambassador Alexander Kmentt, was a featured speaker of the conference.

The current War of Ukraine remains a major topic related to international discussions on nuclear proliferation, along the nuclear weapons transfer regime. Major international powers criticized each other and failed to adopt major commitments, in spite of many countries stressing the implementation of the NPT’s Article 6 on nuclear disarmament.

« Each of the Parties to the Treaty undertakes to pursue negotiations in good faith on effective measures relating to cessation of the nuclear arms race at an early date and to nuclear disarmament, and on a treaty on general and complete disarmament under strict and effective international control »
